Street Roots is a nonprofit, grassroots newspaper that assists people experiencing homelessness and poverty by creating flexible income opportunities. Through education, advocacy and personal expression, we are a catalyst for individual and social change.
street roots, published in Portland, Oregon, has been Portland's flagship publication addressing homelessness and poverty since 1998. The paper is published every two weeks.
We are a nonprofit, 501(c) 3 organization and a member of the North American Street Newspaper Association (NASNA). We have two paid (part-time) staff members.
Where does your $1 go? We receive additional support for operating expenses from local and regional foundations, individual donations and in-kind contributions.
The editorial board includes members of the staff and community. It meets at 9:30 Tuesday morning as part of the regular staff meeting.
Through discussion and consensus, the editorial board sets opinions for the paper regarding important issues in the community. Editorials are then written by various members of the board.
