room.... Another woman helps carry the toys the children are using
.... She ... settles back down for a back rub from another woman who
hasn't missed a beat in a conversation with two others as they grabbed
a few seats among the throng of people, all of them women, who come

To a young Grant Remington, listening to Sean Slattery
play at Portland's Café Orpheus was a defining moment in his
life. It was the mid-1960s, and the chorus of cigarettes, coffee,
guitars and youth could still drown out the din from Vietnam and the
draft that was rising outside. more...
Sunday, Aug. 21, marked the third annual Portland
Challenge, the Willamette River ritual and fundraiser for the House
of Peace and Love Orphanage project in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania. Participants

There are many worthwhile issues for a Portland activist to address.
Personally, I find myself involved in several simply because they

I recently had a discussion that went nowhere because I refused to play by the rules.
My friend "Dale" pointed out an article in a local newspaper that emphasized how overpriced
property is in Portland. That wasn't news to me. I've rented without the hope of buying now for years.
Last week, after being confronted twice on the streets for playing my keyboard and asked
to leave by a bicycle cop and a Clean and Safe officer, I decided to write a letter to a ranking city official.
Now, not mentioning any names, since I don't want more trouble, I was nicely told about the Partnership with the
city between me and street entertainers. I didn't have the gumption to write this official back to say I never
signed off on that agreement with the city of Portland.
