Early Sunday morning, Sept. 24, Pioneer Courthouse Square emptied as 225 teams headed out on the Cascade AIDS Project’s 5K walk. The beats of the First Regiment Drum Corps faded down the route as volunteers and workers reorganized the stage they had set a few hours previous for the 20th Annual AIDSwalk.
Eleven thousand people showed their support by joining the walk and were treated to complimentary coffee, fruit and yogurt by Northwest companies. This year’s goal of $300,000 was met thanks to all the participants, the sponsoring companies, and to CAP’s dedicated organizers. The visible elation of CAP’s organizers could be seen as they wrapped up the days events by announcing the winning costumes, The Fighting T Cells, and recognition of the Walk of Famers, adults who raised more than $1,000 and youths who raised more than $500.
The funds raised will go to the Cascade AIDS Project’s many programs which offer a variety of services to persons living with AIDS. Of these programs, housing occupies a central role, as many infected persons experience homelessness at one time or another. CAP offers housing services that range from eviction prevention to transitional housing to moving and furnishing assistance. Additionally, CAP has many educational services whose aim is to inform landlords, employers, and the public about AIDS and AIDS prevention.
