When a family member or loved one dies, your heart is heavy and it brings you down to your knees.
When you’re homeless and don’t have the money to get to the funeral, that brings you to your knees.
But what happened next brings you on your knees.
Obviously I am not a writer, but people have been saying, “You have been selling papers for two years, you need to write something.” So here goes. I owe you one.
I submitted this picture because a lot of my readers will recognize it. This story is about Art. He came by and told me his dilemma. His brother in California had died, and he needed money to see him for the last time. I felt bad because here is a guy who volunteers his time and effort every day helping the homeless and the poor.
I thought, I’m going to volunteer some of my time and give Art my day’s proceeds, which turned out to be quite puney. But I never did like doing things half-assed, so I thought I’m going to get some help. I put up this sign, which started the ball rolling. When the first lady (Linda) showed up I explained what the sign was about. She immedialtly reached in and put more than $30 in my jar. That blew me away! Then came the people, one after another — $2, $3, $5 here, $10 there. Even $20s. People have done nice things for me too.
Sometimes you’re at a loss for words to describe your feelings. It is like someone is walking toward you and he has two arms full of confetti and throws it over your head and showers you with love, caring and compassion. You’re overwhelmed. I’m sure that’s how Art felt the next time he walked up to me. I had a whole jar full of money. I said, “Art, you have many friends, that’s all your money.” I think I just about saw a grown man cry. On your knees – Yeah!
Once again I have a reason to thank a lot of people. Special thanks to Wild Oats. They provided the setting for this and several employees were quick to help. If you see your name on the list of donations a special kudos to your generosity as well. Thank you, Thank you, and Thank you!
