Director’s Desk

By Israel Bayer

Israel Bayer, Street Roots directorStreet Roots is proud to be working with Portland State University along with local businesses and community organizations to host this year’s North American Street Newspaper Association (NASNA) annual conference on Thursday, July 26 through Sunday, July 29.

The conference will bring together representatives from more than 37 street newspapers throughout North America, along with civil rights activists, newspaper editors and reporters, strategic planners and representatives from the international community helping NASNA to be a part of a growing global movement. The focus of this year’s conference will be on technical assistance and networking.

The importance of a global movement around poverty is crucial to the mission of Street Roots – without the network of newspapers we wouldn’t be able to bring you out -of-the-box alternatives happening around the world. Together we are breaking down the divides of a consolidated media world and the idea that poor people can’t communicate, connect and empower one another through through media and economic development.

Street Roots works with dozens of businesses throughout the Portland region, including New Seasons, Peet’s Coffee, the Alberta and People’s Food Cooperative, Roots Realty, Innovative Solutions, Mirador, A Better Solution, Food Front, Powell’s Bookstore, Fred Meyer and many more. We believe a healthy community has a healthy business climate and we work hard to build the necessary relationships with business owners and workers in the Rose City.

This year’s conference offers the opportunity for individuals and/or your business to get involved in a movement that thinks globally, but acts locally. Street Roots and NASNA are looking for sponsors to work with us to make this year’s conference one to remember. Each sponsor will be recognized with its logo or name in the newspaper, in promotional materials, and on more than 100 T-shirts given to conference attendees and local supporters. Each individual or business will also be given special thanks at the conference itself and for larger sponsorships businesses and non-profits can receive a range of free advertising.

If you and/or your business would like to be a Street Roots and NASNA sponsor please contact me at 503-228-5657. We have a conference brochure, so you and/or your business can easily choose something you would like to donate or learn how to get involved.

We look forward to changing the world together, one paper at a time. Thank you for your generous support!
