Director’s Desk

By Israel Bayer

Street Roots is under construction, literally. The building Street Roots resides on NW Davis Street in Old Town is getting a facelift. Last week, Sisters Of The Road was kind enough to let us sell newspapers to vendors for three days while a temporary wall was constructed in the front of our office.

The construction is going to take an estimated six months, and it’s going to be noisy. So noisy, in fact, that our editorial team is going to be displaced from the office for at least a couple of months. A big thanks to the Julia West House for donating office space for managing editor Joanne Zuhl and incoming intern Miyuki Sese from Antioch College.

of this won’t affect normal business hours for vendors or working with people on the beat. While it may take some getting used to, we’ll be fine. Joanne will be a busy bee, going from one location to another with soggy poems, beautiful rants and insights from the streets in tow. Thank goodness for fareless square, huh?

Street Roots needs your help. We are kicking off this year’s spring fund drive and now more than ever could use your support.

Your donation this spring will go specifically to help vendors with supplies, trainings, and materials needed to become successful, and toward the production of the newspaper. Your support is also a big reason we can keep the cost of the newspaper affordable to vendors.

Your contributions last year made up 35 percent of the organization’s total budget. We simply cannot exist without your love and support. Street Roots’ mission is to assist people experiencing homelessness and poverty by creating flexible income opportunities. Through education, advocacy and personal expression, we are a catalyst for individual and social change. With your support, we are able to fulfill this mission 365 days a year.

We thank you for your guidance throughout the years, and look forward to continuing to bring Portland a unique perspective from the ground up, while empowering people to believe in themselves, to gain an income other than panhandling and to have voice. Together we are creating real change in our community.
