Now you see us...

By Mara Greenbaum, Contributing Writer

An old church façade. A pink sunset over the Hawthorne Bridge. A warm plate of breakfast. A tired face emerging from a sleeping bag cocoon.

These photographs, mounted in rows on long white boards, narrate their photographers’ daily lives on the street. Five men, the students in Sharon Agnor’s art class at the Julia West House day shelter, have been working on the photo essays since last winter.

God bless you and all your loved ones, Roger

By Israel Bayer, Staff Writer

Roger Gates captured the hearts and minds of Portland’s Northwest neighborhood, where he sold the paper for seven years. In the two days leading up to Street Roots finding out about his death, nearly a dozen customers called the office asking where Roger was. He was loved.
