Homeless Families Shelter opens in East County
by Street Roots | 3 Nov 2010

Volunteer opportunities available!

Families without homes in East Multnomah County this winter can find shelter through the Homeless Families Warming Center, 12505, NE Halsey Street, in the Eastminster Presbyterian Church.

The Homeless Family Warming Center  is a 60-bed homeless family shelter open 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.,  now until March 31.  Here, families with children will have a warm, dry, safe and welcoming place to sleep. Human Solutions, the agency operating the shelter, says shelter families will be able to connect with opportunities to housing, employment and other services necessary to end their homelessness.

Volunteers and donations are needed. Click here to learn what you can do to help.

The Homeless Families Warming Center is part of the Family Shelter-to-Housing Partnership, a collaboration between the faith community, Multnomah County, and area non-profit organizations providing shelter, housing replacement and supportive services to homeless families in Portalnd and East Multnomah County.

Partners include: Human Solutions, Eastminster Presbyterian Church, Multnomah County Department of County Human Services, First United Methodist Church, First Unitarian Church, Sunnyside Centenary United Methodist Church, Portland Homeless Family Solutions and 211info.

Last year at this time, there were more than 2,300 people in homeless families receiving help to overcome homelessness. An additional 388 people in homeless families sought shelter or other help but were turned away, according to Human Solutions, which works with homeless families in East County. These families are homeless, living in cars, tents, or other places not meant for human habitation.
