Episode 3: DeVon Pouncey interviews Street Roots' former executive director about the role of street papers during the pandemic
On Episode 3 of the Street Roots podcast, host DeVon Pouncey is joined by Israel Bayer, the director of INSP North America, a bureau of the International Network of Street Papers. Bayer discusses the importance of street papers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Street papers have the ability to shape public opinion and public policy. The work that we were doing already has just escalated during this pandemic” Bayer says.
He also discusses how street papers are more prepared than many to handle the pandemic.
“Street Papers are nimble. We were living in an irrational environment to begin with, with homelessness in America and around the globe. … In many ways, street papers are more prepared than many because we already face so many challenges on the streets,” he says.
Bayer also discusses his transition from his role as executive director at Street Roots to his new position at INSP North America, the honorary doctorate he received from Portland State University, and more.
