Street Roots Podcast | Talking with Sen. Ron Wyden

Street Roots
Episode 11: Oregon’s senior U.S. senator discusses Trump’s attempt to undermine the Postal Service, issues around digital voting and the Census — and, of course, the Portland Trail Blazers
by DeVon Pouncey | 20 Aug 2020

On this episode of the Street Roots Podcast, host DeVon Pouncey is joined by U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden, who shares his thoughts on President Donald Trump’s removal of United States Postal Service mailboxes from American cities, which includes Portland and Eugene.

“I think when you take the cumulative effect of what he is doing to the postal service, it amounts to voter suppression. This is a deliberate strategy because Donald Trump thinks if people vote by mail, they may not vote for him,” Wyden said.

He also discusses his agenda to address racial health disparities in America, saying:

“If you look at the statistics, they really take your breath away in terms of the fact that COVID has hit Black communities, brown communities and communities of color across the nation so disproportionately hard. And, that hasn’t been the case in the affluent white suburbs.”

Sen. Wyden also made sure to also acknowledge the Portland Trail Blazers earning the 8th seed in the NBA playoffs.

“I haven’t been able to stop smiling,” he said. “I think that the last game in particular (referring to the play-in game against the Memphis Grizzlies), seeing CJ step up that way; Nurk had a fabulous games. And I’ll tell you, Dame is just the gold standard because he saw that CJ had the hot hand and he was just going to keep feeding him.”

Wyden and Pouncey also discussed digital voting and its impact, the Census and more.
