Street Roots
Episode 13: The Street Roots correspondent discusses his reporting on builders’ influence on state policy, GoFundMe and more
by DeVon Pouncey | 20 Nov 2020

On this episode, Street Roots correspondent Chris May joined host DeVon Pouncey to discuss his recent coverage on homebuilder lobbyists and their influence on policymakers in Oregon.

"For quite a long time, the homebuilders industry has had a pretty significant influence on how those (Building Coast Division) rules play out and how regulators oversee their operations," May said.

May also discussed his latest piece on GoFundMe and some of their deficiencies.

"I saw that GoFundMe was raising quite a bit of money as well (in reference to Oregon wildfires)," he said, "and I was curious what sort of transparency and accountability was there for how this money was being handled. As I started asking questions, I realized GoFundMe is a for-profit corporation, and I can ask them all types of questions … and they basically don't have to tell me anything that they don't want to tell me."

May also discussed the pros and cons of reporting during a pandemic and more.
