Beginning May 16, Portland Copwatch will hold a series of training sessions for people interested in volunteering, monitoring police behavior and knowing their own rights in interactions with law enforcement. Pre-registration is required, so if you’re interested, check it out:

Portland Copwatch orientation (Sat. May 16, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.):
Introduces you to our organization and many of the issues we work on, covers possibilities for volunteering, and contextualizes some of the “Alphabet soup” we talk about at meetings. (What’s the PJTTF? The CRC? What’s PARC, the AMA, the AFSC? How can you express being anti-police brutality but not anti-police?)
The orientation is mandatory for people who want to be active members of Portland Copwatch.

Your Rights and the Police seminar (Sat. May 16, 12:30 p.m.-2 p.m.):
Reviews basic rights to know for being stopped by, harmed by, or when observing the police. A lawyer will be present to help answer legal questions best not answered by the volunteers at PCW.

Copwatch training
(Sat. May 30, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.):
Learn how to safely, legally and effectively monitor police behavior. Includes background on what to do when stopped by police and how to file complaints. Includes role playing and a training video.

Details:

All sessions will be held at the Portland Mennonite Church, 1312 SE 35th, just north of Hawthorne (enter on Main St).

Snacks will be provided, so brown-bagging a sandwich will be a good idea if you need to eat a full lunch.

PLEASE pre-register; space is limited. We request a $10 total donation to secure your place in the trainings.

Just $10 covers all three sessions, regardless of how many you are planning to attend. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.

The donation will help us cover costs related to the trainings.

It is highly recommended to attend the first two trainings as background for the Copwatch training on the 30th.

Please RSVP by phone (503.236.3065) or email (trainings@portlandcopwatch.org) and send donations to Portland Copwatch, PO Box 42456, Portland, OR 97242. RSVP now to secure your place; there will be a cut-off point to limit the number of participants.
